1. Introduction ofPost-Doctoral Research Station
Under the guidance of high-level doctoral supervisors, thepost-doctoral research station in Environmental Science and Engineering of East China University of Science and Technology carries out postdoctoral researches based on the first-level discipline doctoral programs of Environmental Science and Engineering, and national, provincial and ministerial scientific research bases. Aiming at the international subject frontier and facing the major needs of the country, region and industry, the station has been serving for the sustainable development of industry and the ecological safety of metropolis guided by the concept of sustainable development and risk management, and conducting high-level scientific researches, technological development and engineering application in fields of green industry and pollution control, solid waste recycling, clean energy technology, environmental risk assessment and management to achieve the goal of high-quality ecological environment. It has become an important base for advanced scientific researches, high-tech achievements transformation and high-level talent cultivation in the field of Resources and Environment.
In recent years, the station has received a large number of PhDs of different majors including Environment, Chemical Engineering, Energy, Bioengineering, Chemistry, Materials and so on to conduct interdisciplinary scientific research. Postdoctoral students in the station have undertaken or participated in a large number of national, provincial and ministerial research projects. Many scientific research achievements get remarkable environmental, economic and social benefits after being put into application.
2. Research Direction and Influences at Home and Abroad
(1) In terms of industrial water pollution control, the station has studied on the process emission reduction, high purification and resource-based technology of industrial wastewater with high concentration, high salinity and high toxicity for 30 years. The patent of efficient micro-interface driven separation has broken through the bottleneck of liquid-solid mass transfer. More than 100 sets of petrochemical units have realized the emission reduction of sewage and waste water. The station took the lead in setting up environmental simulation teaching in China and publishes the first textbook namedEnvironmental Engineering Simulation and Control.Dozens of patents, such as Moderately Halophilic Bacteria Technology, improved A/O Technology and BCB Technology (Biology Catalysis Biology), have been successfully applied to wastewater treatment and reuse projects of more than 100 enterprises like Shanghai Gaoqiao Petrochemical and Lunan Fertilizer Plant, promoting the sustainable development of coal chemical industry and petrochemical industry. In the past decade, the station has undertaken more than 20 important projects, including the national key R&D project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Special S&T Project on Treatment and Control of Water Pollution and projects of National Natural Science Fund, as well as nearly 100 crosswise tasks, winning more than 10 provincial and ministerial awards. In 2016, together with the Ecological Environment Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, it successfully applied for the National Engineering Laboratory for High-concentration Refractory Organic Wastewater Treatment Technologies approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.
(2) In terms of the air pollution chemistry and control, the station began to study PM2.5 and ozone pollution in 1988, and carried out earlier studies on brown carbon, mercury and individuals’ exposure to black carbon particles in Shanghai. In collaboration with Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, it established the first domestic vertical observation platform based on tethered balloon on in Fengxian District. We carried out vertical observation of PM2.5 and ozone with the largest load tethered balloon in the world, knowing the law of regional transportation and local contribution, which provided the basis for the formulation of policies and measures to win the blue sky defense war in Shanghai. In terms of treat sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide, the station developed a micro- and meso-scale integrated technique to transform flue gas desulfurization products and carbon dioxide, which got tested in SINOPEC. The school also led the establishment of an industry-university-research institute collaboration association for the control and treatment of VOCs in theYangtze River Delta Region, so as to develop biotechnology, low and normal temperature catalysis technology, VOCs and odor simultaneous removal technology, etc. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 20 national, provincial and ministerial projects.
(3) In terms of solid waste disposal and resource recycling, the station has developed the separation process intensification technology of complex system for Multi-Use utilization of salt lake resources and recycling of urban mineral resources. We have broken through the bottleneck of extracting resources including potassium, magnesium and lithium, supporting the economic development of the western region. Focusing on the efficient transformation of solid wastes in industries like coal chemical, titanium chemical and biomass industry, we have carried out researches and built a ten thousand tons, pilot scale device for fly ash fine gradient utilization, so that the activation temperature can be reduced by 20% - 45%. Besides, the 4-meter-diameter equipment for gasification of biomass and solid waste has been industrialized. The station has also undertaken “863 Projects” for the disposal and recycling of large amount of solid wastes, and the key R&D plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology, winning 2 second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress, and 3 first prizes of Science and Technology Progress at provincial and ministerial level.

(4) In the aspect of environmental risk assessment and management, the station, focusing on the collaborative risk and mechanism of trace chemicals and microorganisms, carried out the technical research on the exposure level monitoring and risk prevention of persistent pollutants, environmental hormones and volatile organic compounds in the field of water environment risk and water quality safety. Through the identification of the multi-scale stressing mechanism of heavy metals and organic pollutants, as well as a simultaneous control technique, the station successfully realized the applications of on-site restoration. During the past five years, the station has provided 2 suggestions to Shanghai municipal government for decision-making, helped the state and local governments to formulate and issue 6 environmental protection standards, becoming an important technical support for national and Shanghai environmental standard formulation and chemical control. It has been approved to establish key laboratory and engineering center of Shanghai Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, winning 6 provincial and ministerial awards and achieving more than 20 patents in recent five years.
(5) In terms of prevention and emergency response of hazardous chemical accidents, focusing on chemical safety risk assessment and control, research and developed, the station has developed risk assessment technology for regional major accidents in chemical industry and Multi-Use safety planning technology for regional major chemical accidents, and carried out the research on the emergency plan and key technologies for major accidents. We actively worked out plans, remediation and plans for major safety emergencies, serving for urban safety and scientific decision-making of government agencies. We also served the public for knowledge popularization and explanation of Tianjin Ruihai explosion and liquid ammonia leakage. In the past five years, the station has published over 20 SCI papers, undertaken one key R&D project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, applied for and participated in more than 20 national, provincial, ministerial and enterprise projects.
(6) In terms of clean conversion and utilization technology of coal, the station has produced clean syngas based on pressurized entrained flow gasifier with raw materials including coal, petroleum coke, residual oil, natural gas, coke oven gas, biomass, sludge, garbage and son on. We have developed new entrained flow gasification technology, new gasification process system and key equipment, high efficiency and long life gasification nozzle, PDP (Process Design Package) for the gasification, etc. We also carried out basic research on the application of entrained flow gasification process, including multiphase flow of jet and impinging jet, gas-phase reaction under high temperature and pressure, atomization for high viscosity non-Newtonian fluid, super-dense phase gas-solid two-phase flow, gas-liquid-solid three-phase flow and heat and mass transfer, slag flow, phase change and heat transfer, numerical simulation and system simulation calculation of gasification process, etc. In terms of deep processing and utilization of syngas, we have developed catalysts, reactors and technologies for syngas deep processing.
