Overview

Founded in 1997, the School of Resources and Environmental Engineering was composed of several prominent disciplines including Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Coal Chemical Industry, etc. After more than 20 years of construction and development, a coordinated layout has been formed facilitating the development of disciplines in resources, energy, environment and security.

The school has dedicated itself to the well-being of Chinese society and to world development. Under the guidance of a vision towards sustainable development, circular economy and cleaner production, the school aims to improve urban environment and realize energy saving, emission reduction and efficiency enhancement of industrial enterprises. The school has long been engaged in high-level scientific research, technology development and engineering applications, and has formed its own characteristics and advantages in research directions such as industrial pollution control, solid waste recycling and reclamation, clean energy technology, chemical substance environmental risk assessment and control, etc. All the disciplines in the school has performed well in industry-university-research collaborations, and demonstrated high ratios of technology transfer.

Up to now, 77 of 110 faculty members are full-time teachers, including 32 full professors, 30 associate professors, 15 lecturers and 10 postdocs; among them, 92% have a doctoral degree and 60% are under 45 years old. The school has introduced and trained a great number of national and international well-known experts as well as young scientists, and has formed a high-level talent team that is composed of Changjiang Scholars, recipients of the ‘National Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars of China’, chief scientists of the ‘National Key Basic Research Program of China (973 Program)’, chief scientists and experts in Resources and Environmental Science for the ‘National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program)’, leading scientists, engineers and innovators for the ‘National High-level Personnel Special Support Program (Ten Thousand Talents Program)’, recipients of the national ‘Hundred Million Talent Program’, national leading scientists, engineers and innovators in environmental protection technology, recipients of the ‘Trans-Century Training Program Foundation for the Talents by the State Education Commission’ and the ‘Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University of Ministry of Education of China’, etc. In addition, the school also has two innovation teams in the key area of the Ministry of Science and Technology, one innovation team supported by the ‘Program for Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team in University’ of the Ministry of Education, and two university-level research and innovation teams.

At present, the school runs one post-doctoral research station (Environmental Science and Engineering), one first-level discipline doctoral program (Environmental Science and Engineering), three second-level discipline doctoral programs (Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, and Thermal Engineering), two Shanghai key disciplines (Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Science and Engineering (first-level disciplines (Class B) of Shanghai Universities)), one first-level discipline master program (Environmental Science and Engineering), three second-level discipline master programs (Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, and Thermal Engineering), and two master of engineering programs (Environmental Engineering, and Security Engineering). Besides, the school has also jointly set up one master program in Resource Recycling Science and Engineering with the School of Chemical Engineering, and another master program in Safety Science and Engineering with the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering.

The school consists of three departments at the moment: the Department of Environmental Engineering, the Department of Energy and Chemical Engineering, and the Department of Resource Recycling Science and Engineering; and four undergraduate majors: Environmental Engineering, Security Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, and Resource Recycling Science and Engineering. Every year, more than 180 undergraduate students are enrolled as well as over 130 postgraduate students. There are now 1198 full-time students in this school, including 726 undergraduates, 353 masters, and 119 PhD. The school has been actively promoting the exchange and cooperation with international well-known universities; and has signed agreements with many noted universities on undergraduate and postgraduate exchange and training, including the University of Missouri, Colorado State University, Fédération Gay-Lussac, University of Florida, Technical University of Berlin, University of Sheffield, University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil, and Queensland University of Technology.

The school has two national research bases so far: the National Engineering Research Center for Comprehensive Utilization of Salt Lake Resources, and the National Engineering Laboratory for High-Concentration Refractory Organic Wastewater Treatment Technologies; eight provincial and ministerial research bases: the Engineering Research Center of Salt Lake Resources Process Engineering, Ministry of Education, the State Environmental Protection Key Laboratory of Environmental Risk Assessment and Control on Chemical Process, Coal Gasification Technology Research Center of National Energy Administration, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Coal Gasification, Shanghai Environmental Protection Key Laboratory of Environmental Standard and Risk Management for Chemical Pollutants, Shanghai Environmental Protection Engineering Center of Prevention Control and Remediation Technology for Construction Site Pollution, Shanghai Environmental Protection Engineering Center of Whole-Process Pollution Control in Chemical Industry, Shanghai Engineering Technology Center of Heavy Metal Pollution Control and Recycling; and five university research institutes or centers: Institute of Environmental Engineering, Institute of Process Engineering for Natural Resources, Institute of Clean Coal Technology, Research Center for Risk Assessment and Control of Hazardous Chemicals, and Research Center for Biomass Energy.

During the last five years, with a focus on national strategies such as the Belt and Road Initiative, the tough battle against pollution, and the ecological protection in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the school has undertaken and completed over 600 important research projects such as those supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the “973 Program”, the National Science and Technology Pillar Program, the “863 Program”, the Major Science and Technology Program for Water Pollution Control and Treatmentthe National Key Research and Development Program of China, provincial and ministerial research projects, university-enterprise cooperation, international technology transfer, etc. The annual funding income of the school is nearly 70 million RMB on average. During the same period, the school also won two State Science and Technology Progress Awards (second class), one State Technological Invention Award (second class), one Provincial and Ministerial Technological Invention Award (grand prize), three Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Progress Award (first class), and one Provincial and Ministerial Technological Invention Award (first class).

The school provides strong support for the Engineering discipline of ECUST to enter top 1‰ of the ESI (Essential Science Indicator) discipline ranking, and the Environment and Ecology discipline to enter top 1%. The Environmental Engineering discipline has been named in the list of Shanghai key disciplines, Shanghai first-level disciplines, Shanghai class IV peak discipline development program; and has been supporting the construction of double first class disciplines in ECUST through the development of a “Green Chemical Engineering and Security” platform and the “Interdisciplinary Research Institute of Environmental Equipment”. The Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics discipline has been named in the list of Shanghai first-level disciplines, and has been supporting the construction of double first class disciplines in ECUST through the development of the “Advanced Energy Technology and Equipment” platform. Focusing on the development towards a Double First Class University, our school has been actively promoting academic and research directions such as the “Reduction and Recycling of Pollutant Emission”, “Resources and Chemical Engineering”, and “Clean and Efficient Energy Conversion and Cleaner Production”, and has achieved significant progress.
