According to the recently updated data of the Web of Science database, the article “Adsorptive removal of bisphenol A, chloroxylenol, and carbamazepine from water using a novel β-cyclodextrin polymer” published in the journal Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety was selected as “ESI Highly Cited Papers” with the number of citations ranking among the top 1% of the world in the field of environment and ecology. With the team, Professor Zhou Yanbo of ECUST through this paper has made great contributions to promote the steady progress of ECUST’s environmental and ecological ESI disciplines.

In recent years, emerging contaminants have been widely detected in water bodies around the world, seriously threatening human health and ecological safety, and posing great challenges to drinking water safety. The adsorption method is favored because of its low cost, simple operation and good treatment effect. The development of selective and high-efficiency adsorbents is particularly critical for the practical application of adsorption technology in wastewater treatment processes. Based on the principle of nucleophilic substitution, a new type of β-cyclodextrin polymer material (β-CDP) has been produced by polymerizing β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile being the cross-linking agent. Taking Activated carbon (AC) as a comparison of adsorption effect, this paper selected pollutants such as bisphenol A (BPA), carbamazepine (CBZ), and p-chlorom-xylenol (PCMX) as representative micro-pollutants in water for research. The results showed that, in the adsorption system, whether it has single or multiple pollutants, β-CDP exhibits a highly selective adsorption behavior for BPA, CBZ and PCMX. Compared with AC, the competitive adsorption behavior of each pollutant on β-CDP is only slightly inhibited. At the same time, the adsorption performance of β-cyclodextrin polymer is not affected by pH, ionic strength and humic acid. This type of polymer has a good removal effect on bisphenol compounds and good regeneration performance, which has high application value.
