Founded in 1997, the School of Resources and Environmental Engineering is composed of several prominent disciplines including Environmental Engineering, Energy Chemical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, etc.. It now has 1 postdoctoral mobile station (Environmental Science and Engineering), 1 first-level doctoral program (Environmental Science and Engineering), 3 Ph.D. programs (Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Thermal Engineering), 2 Shanghai key disciplines (Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, first-level discipline of universities of Shanghai (category B)), 1 first-level discipline master’s degree program (Environmental Science and Engineering), 3 second-level discipline master’s degree program (Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science,Thermal Engineering), 2 fields of Engineering Master (field of Environmental Engineering, field of Safety Engineering). In addition, it has cooperated with the School of Chemical Engineering to build a master’s degree in Resource Recycling Science and Engineering and the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering to build a master’s degree in Safety Science and Engineering.

The School of Resources and Environmental Engineering consists of 3 departments: Department of Environmental Engineering, Department of Energy Chemical Engineering and Department of Resources Engineering, 5 research institutes (centers): Institute of Environmental Engineering, Institute of Environmental Process Engineering, Institute of Clean Coal Technology, Research Center of Risk Assessment and Control of Hazardous Materials and Research Center of Biomass Energy, 9 national and provincial research bases: National Engineering Research Center for Integrated Utilization of Salt Lake Resources, National Engineering Laboratory for Treatment Technology of High Concentration and Refractory Organic Wastewater, Resources (Salt Lake) Process Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education, State Environmental Protection Key Laboratory of Environmental Risk Assessment and Control on Chemical Process,  Coal Gasification Technology Research Center of National Energy Administration, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Coal Gasification, The Environmental Protection Key Laboratory for Chemical Pollutants Environmental Standards and Risk Management,Shanghai, The Environmental Protection Engineering Center for Pollution Prevention Control and Restoration of the Construction Land, Shanghai.

More than 180 undergraduate students are enrolled in 4 majors every year that span Environmental Engineering, Safety Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering and Resource Recycling Science and Engineering. The school now has 1149 full-time students including 720 undergraduates, 324 master students and 105 doctoral students. The school actively promotes exchanges and cooperation with well-known foreign universities and has signed undergraduate and postgraduate exchange and training agreements with the University of Missouri, La Fédération Gay-Lussac (FGL), the University of Florida, the Technical University of Berlin, the University of Rapperswil, the Queensland University of Technology,etc..

The school has 105 faculty and staffs (82 full-time faculty), including 31 professors and 28 associate professors, where 91.4% of them own Doctoral Degrees and over 72% of them are under 45 years old. The school now has a number of domestic and foreign well-known experts and young and middle-aged academic leaders and backbone, thus, formed a innovation team led by chair professors of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program, winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, chief scientists of the 973 Projects, subject matter experts and chief experts of 863 Projects, candidates of the New Century Talents Project.

The school of Resources and Environmental Engineering, under the guidance of the concept of sustainable development, circular economy and cleaner production and with the goal of improving environment and achieving energy conservation, consumption and emission reduction and efficiency improvement for industrial enterprises, is based on the frontier of International Environmental Science and Engineering and geared to the major needs of country, regions and industries. The school has formed its characteristics and advantages in the long-term high-level scientific research, technology development and engineering application on industrial pollution control, solid waste recycling, clean energy technology and environmental risk assessment and control of chemical substances. In the past five years, it has won three second class awards of the National Award for Scientific and Technological Progress and four provincial and ministerial-level awards including one special award of the Technological Innovation Award, two first class awards of the Science and Technology Progress Award and one first class award of the Science and Technology Innovation Award.

The school has trained a large number of high-level talents represented by Hu Jianying (the 7th Young Female Scientist Award, chief professor of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program, winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars) and Yang Min (winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, candidate of Hundred Talents of Chinese Academy of Sciences),making outstanding contributions to the efficient and clean utilization of resources  energy and environmental protection in China. The School of Resources and Environmental Engineering of East China University of Science and Technology has become an important base for high-level scientific research, high-tech achievement transformation and high-level talents training in the field of environment in China.
