In 2025, a total of 1,112 people across the city applied for the title of Shanghai Craftsman. After more than six months of multi-level selection, review and evaluation, and public notification, 112 Shanghai Craftsmen were finally selected. Liu Gang, an alumnus of the Environmental Engineering program, Class of 2000, from the School of Resources and Environmental Engineering, received this honor.
Mr. Liu Gang, as the head of the biological metrology team of Shanghai Institute of Measurement and Testing Technology Co., Ltd. under Shanghai Inspection Group, innovatively proposed the research-application dual-wheel driving model, which directly links scientific research to the most urgent metrology needs of the industry. Under his leadership, the team has formulated 18 national calibration specifications and 11 national standard methods, and expanded 17 CNAS calibration capabilities, building reliable biological weights and measures support for the regional biomedical industry from R&D, production to quality control. The team has served more than 2,000 enterprise visits cumulatively, completed metrology calibration for over 8,000 equipment units, and has become a benchmark in the biological metrology field in East China. The laboratory has also been successively approved as a Key Laboratory of the State Administration for Market Regulation and a Shanghai Public Technical Service Platform. In the important field of pathogenic microorganism metrology related to people's health and safety, he led the team to overcome multiple metrology industry problems in the field of quantitative analysis of pathogenic microorganisms, and developed 38 types of biological reference materials, 5 of which are national primary reference materials, with measurement uncertainty reaching the international leading level. As a member of the National Technical Committee for Biological Metrology, a member of the National Technical Committee for Biochemical Testing Standardization, and a member of the editorial board of the Acta Metrologica Sinica, Liu Gang actively promotes academic exchanges, organizes metrology comparisons, and has trained more than ten high-level professional talents including senior engineers at the professor level, Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Rising Stars, and recipients of the Shanghai Sailing Program, reserving core talents for the future of the industry and promoting the overall progress of biological metrology capabilities. With the rapid development of the biomedical industry and life science research, Liu Gang is leading his team to expand new research directions to support high-quality biomanufacturing and high-precision scientific data collection. He has completed a number of key scientific research tasks, including the sub-project of the Shanghai major special project International Human Phenome Project, the National NQI Key R&D Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation projects, and relevant achievements were shared at the seminar of the 2024 World's Top Scientists Forum.
