Environmental Engineering

The major, Environmental Engineering, started to enroll students in 1981. The specialty, Environmental Engineering, of our university is the specialty that first enrolled students in 1981 in China. The specialty was approved and selected by the country as the key discipline of Shanghai in 2007, and it was approved and selected as the national featured specialty in 2010. In 2011, the specialty was included in the Program of Excellent Engineer Education and Training of the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it was approved and selected as the first-class discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering of higher learning institutions in Shanghai. In 2014, 2017, and 2023, it passed the professional certification of Chinese engineering education three times. In 2017, it was selected as the specialty of first-class discipline construction of National First-class Universities and Disciplines of China. In 2018, the specialty set the full-English major of Environmental Engineering. In 2019, it was selected as the station of a national first-class undergraduate specialty, and it was approved and selected as a program of the new engineering educational revolution of the Ministry of Education. A postdoctoral roving station, a Level-I disciplinary doctoral station, a postgraduate station, and an engineering postgraduate station. The teaching power is strong, and the specialty has 24 doctoral supervisors and 19 professors, including 4 national talents. It also has a team of pollutant emission reduction and reclamation innovation of the Ministry of Science and Technology.


Main Professional Courses: Water Pollution Control Engineering (first-class national course), Solid Waste Disposal and Reclamation (first-class national course), Atmospheric Pollution Control Engineering, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Analysis and Monitoring, Environmental Engineering Design, Environmental Engineering Microbiology, and other main courses, as well as Enterprise EHS Risk Management (first-class national course), Environmental Engineering Simulation and Artificial Intelligence, Introduction to Carbon Neutrality, and other popular courses.


Graduate Developmental Directions: About 50% of undergraduates choose to further study at home and abroad after graduation. They work for governmental authorities, environmental safety supervision and management departments, departments of environmental protection science research, higher learning institutions, professional environmental engineering organizations (testing, evaluation, certification, etc.), design institutes, large and medium-sized enterprises, public communities, etc.

Energy and Power Engineering

The major, Energy and Power Engineering, is a specialty that can better adapt to the historical development after being developed and adjusted based on the specialty set at the time of establishing the university in 1952, Fuel Engineering. The specialty was selected as a station of the national first-class undergraduate specialty construction in 2019. In 2022, it passed the certification of engineering education. It is one of the specialties constructed by the Platform of Advantageous Discipline Innovation of the Program 985. The superior disciplines of the specialty, Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics, are first-class disciplines of Shanghai. A doctoral station and a postgraduate station of Thermal Energy Engineering, as well as a postgraduate station of the specialty, Clean Energy Technology, are set. The specialty has a strong strength in teaching resources, including 2 provincial innovation teams, 16 professors, 24 doctoral supervisors, and 5 national high-level talents, which involve 1 member of the Discipline Review Group of the Degree Office, the State Council, 1 chief scientist of the Program 973 of China, and 5 members who are included in the Program of Talents of the New Century of the Ministry of Education. The specialty undertook research tasks entrusted by the National Key Research and Development Program of China, the Program 973 of China, the Program 863 of China, international cooperative programs, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and enterprises, and won 2 National Second Prizes of Scientific and Technological Progress, 1 Grand Prize of the Technological Invention Awards of Shanghai, and more than 10 Provincial First Prizes of First Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress. Based on its coal-gasification technology, the specialty has successively granted technical permissions to American and Korean companies, which blazes a trail of exporting sets of chemical engineering technologies to developed countries. The scientific research laboratory with an area larger than 4,000 square meters and the advanced scientific research and experiment platform that is worth over RMB 5,000 are all provided for the programs of undergraduate innovation, entrepreneurship, scientific research, and practice.


Through systematic theoretical study and practical training, graduates of the specialty have a solid foundation, a wide scope of knowledge, and strong working competence and employment adaptability.

Energy Storage Science and Engineering

Energy storage is an important technical base of the construction of a new energy system and an important support to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality and carbon peaking, and it is also an important field that can give birth to new business formats of energy in China and help to seize the new strategic highland in the world. Facing the important need imposed by the national energy revolution and the quick development of the new energy industry, the specialty persists in the tenet of foundation consolidation, practice strengthening, and innovation valuation:, integrates advantageous resources of teaching and scientific research of the whole university, realizes multi-disciplinary and multi-field crossing, cultivate high-level talents with competence in technical research and development and production management in the fields related to energy storage featuring chemical energy storage, compensates insufficient high-level, proficient, top, and scarce talents in the field of energy storage, and provides necessary talent support for the development of China's energy storage industry and the energy cause. The Program of Double-Bachelor-Degree Compound Talent Training of Environmental Engineering-Sociology

The double-degree program is based on two specialties of our university, Environmental Engineering and Sociology. The specialty, Environmental Engineering, of our university is one of the units that first engaged in the teaching and scientific research of environmental engineering. In 1998, the establishment of a doctoral station of Environmental Engineering was approved. In 2006, the establishment of a doctoral station of the Level-I discipline, Environmental Science and Engineering, was approved, and the title of the Key Discipline of Environmental Engineering of Shanghai was approved in 2007. In 2010, the specialty, Environmental Engineering, was approved and selected as a featured specialty of higher learning institutions. In 2011, the specialty, Environmental Engineering, was approved and included in the Program of Outstanding Engineering Education and Training of the Ministry of Education for program construction. In 2012, it was approved and selected as the first-class discipline (Class-B) of Environmental Science and Engineering of Shanghai. In 2017, it was included in the list of first-class discipline construction of National First-class Universities and Disciplines. In 2014, 2017, and 2023, it passed the professional certification of Chinese engineering education three times, and it was selected as the national first-class specialty for undergraduate unit construction. The specialty of our university, Sociology, is a national first-class specialty for undergraduate unit construction. In 2005, it obtained the right to grant doctoral degrees, and it was included in the list of key disciplines to be constructed in Shanghai. In 2011, the specialty set a doctoral station of the Level-I sociological discipline and a postdoctoral research station of Sociology. The specialties of our university, Environmental Engineering and Sociology, are both national specialties of first-class undergraduate unit construction, first-class disciplines of higher learning institutions in Shanghai, and doctoral stations of Level-I disciplines, forming an alliance between giants.

The Program of Double-Bachelor-Degree Compound Talent Training of Energy and Economy

The double-degree is based on two specialties of the university, Energy and Power Engineering and Economics. The specialty, Energy and Power Engineering, was formerly known as the specialty, Fuel Engineering, which was established in 1952 when the university was first built. In 2003, due to the need of the specialty's features and discipline development, the major, Thermal Energy and Power Engineering, was established, and its name was altered as Energy and Power Engineering in 2013. In 2005, a Level-I doctoral station was set. In 2019, the specialty was selected as the first group of specialties for the first-class undergraduate unit construction of China. The specialty, Economics, is developed based on the specialty set in 1999, International Economy and Trading. Depending on the advantageous resources of the Department of Economics, the specialty was adjusted according to the catalogue of undergraduate specialties of the Ministry of Education. It was formally approved by the Ministry of Education in the first half of 2013, and the cultivation of the first group of students of the undergraduate specialty, Economics, formally started in September 2013. The two specialties, Energy and Power Engineering and Economics, have a powerful teaching team. Abundant achievements of scientific research on energy cleaning and efficient transformation, as well as economic analysis, have been made.
