The School of Resource and Environmental Engineering persists in the orientation of the efficient utilization of national resources and energy and the strategic need for green and sustainable development, centers on the fundamentals of the process of coal transformation, advanced coal gasification technology, chemicals made of synthetic gas, transformation between biomass and available resources, industrial water pollution control, atmospheric pollution chemistry and control, solid waste disposal and resource recycling, salt lake resource comprehensive utilization, environmental risk evaluation and management, chemical engineering safety evaluation, and other fields to carry out considerable fundamental and innovative scientific research and technical breakthroughs. In the fields of large-scale coal gasification technology, chemical engineering process pollution control technology, salt lake resource comprehensive utilization, etc., the school's scientific research is in a leading position in China.
The school has 3 national scientific research bases, namely t the National Key Laboratory of Coal Liquefaction, Gasification and Efficient Low Carbon Utilization, the National Engineering Research Center of Industrial Wastewater Detoxication and Resource Recovery (co-construction),the Large scale Coal Gasification and Coal based New Materials Engineering Research Center (co-construction), as well as 9 provincial bases of scientific research, including the Integrated Research Platform For Greener Hydrogen Production and Utilization,the Resource (Salt Lake) Process Engineering Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center,the Key Laboratory of Environmental Risk Assessment and Control of Chemical Processes for State Environmental Protection,the National Energy Coal Gasification Technology Research and Development Engineering Center, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Environmental Standards and Risk Management of Chemical Pollutants for Environmental Protection, the Pollutant Reduction and Resource Utilization Innovation Talent Introduction Base, the Zero carbon utilization of carbon containing waste resources, Ministry of Education Engineering Center, and theShanghai Emergency Management Bureau Key Laboratory of Chemical Reaction Safety, as well as two international cooperative bases, the Base of Innovative Inspiration Guidance for Pollutant Emission Reduction and Reclamation, and the Shanghai Potassium Lithium Strategic Resources International Joint Laboratory.
Emergency Management Bureau, and 5 university-level scientific research bases, including the Research Institute of Environmental Engineering, the Research Institute of Resource Process, the Research Institute of Clean Coal Technology, the Research Center of Reaction Safety, and the Research Center of Biomass Energy and Materials.
The school has undertaken the important research tasks of multiple plans, such as the Program 973, the Program 863, the National Science and Technology Support Program, the National Key Research and Development Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. since 2009, and the expenditure for scientific research, with an amount of nearly RMB 1.5 billion, has been funded. It has developed a group of techniques and devices with independent property rights in the fields of resources, energy, and environment and made multiple symbolic achievements, including 9 national technological awards and more than 70 provincial awards. The school held the International Freiberg Conference on Circular Carbon Technologies, Volatile Organic Compound Comprehensive Governance Technology Forum, and other international and domestic academic conferences, forming an important academic influence in the fields of resources and environment at home and abroad.
Centering on the tasks related to the strategic goal, Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality, the school fosters new growth points in the combination of traditional advantageous disciplines and emerging fields and industries, makes integrated breakthroughs in multiple disciplines, supports industrial needs and industrial development, and guides carbon neutrality of Chinese chemical engineering to go out to the world.
