Founded in 1997, the School of Resource and Environmental Engineering comprises advantageous disciplines, including Environmental Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Power Engineering and Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, etc. First-class disciplines of Environmental Science and Engineering of Shanghai, key disciplines of Environmental Engineering of Shanghai, Level-I disciplinary doctoral programs, postgraduate programs, and postdoctoral research stations of Environmental Science and Engineering, doctoral programs and postgraduate programs of the specialties of Resource and Environment (including the field of Security Engineering), and Level-II doctoral programs and postgraduate programs of Thermal Power Engineering and Energy Storage Science and Engineering are set in the school. The school supports the university's disciplines of Engineering to rank in the top 1‰ of the global ESI and the disciplines of Environment and Ecology to rank in the top 1% of the global ESI. In August 2021, the School of Carbon Neutrality and Future Technology, ECUST was established in the university, and it was subordinate to the School of Resource and Environmental Engineering. In January 2023, the school took the lead to construct the School of Carbon Neutrality Industries, which was selected as one of the second group of key industrial schools of Shanghai.

The School of Resource and Environmental Engineering has 3 national and 9 provincial scientific research bases (including 2 international cooperative bases), including the National Key Laboratory of Coal Liquefaction, Gasification and Efficient Low Carbon Utilization, the National Engineering Research Center of Industrial Wastewater Detoxication and Resource Recovery (co-construction)the Large scale Coal Gasification and Coal based New Materials Engineering Research Center  (co-construction)the Integrated Research Platform For Greener Hydrogen Production and Utilizationthe Resource (Salt Lake) Process Engineering Ministry of Education Engineering Research Centerthe Key Laboratory of Environmental Risk Assessment and Control of Chemical Processes for State Environmental Protectionthe National Energy Coal Gasification Technology Research and Development Engineering Center, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Environmental Standards and Risk Management of Chemical Pollutants for Environmental Protection,  the Pollutant Reduction and Resource Utilization Innovation Talent Introduction Base, the Zero carbon utilization of carbon containing waste resources, Ministry of Education Engineering Center, and theShanghai Emergency Management Bureau Key Laboratory of Chemical Reaction Safety, as well as two international cooperative bases, the Base of Innovative Inspiration Guidance for Pollutant Emission Reduction and Reclamation, and the Shanghai Potassium Lithium Strategic Resources International Joint Laboratory.

 The school runs three undergraduate specialties, including Environmental Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, and Energy Storage Science and Engineering, among which Environmental Engineering and Energy and Power Engineerin are stations of the construction of the first group of first-class undergraduate specialties of China. At the same time, 2 dual-bachelor-degree composite talent training programs, namely Environmental Engineering-Sociology and Energy and Economy, are also set. At present, the school has more than 1,700 full-time students, including over 900 undergraduates and over 600 postgraduates. The school actively es cooperations with famous colleges abroad, and it has signed agreements on undergraduate and postgraduate exchange and training with the University of Sheffield (England), the Technical University of Berlin (Germany), the National University of Singapore, etc.

At present, the school has 113 faculty members, including 83 full-time teachers, and young teachers account for 60% of the total. The school has introduced and cultivated a group of experts who are famous at home and abroad, middle-aged and young academic leaders and backbones, forming a team of high-level talents represented by academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. In addition, the school has 2 teams for innovation in key fields of the Ministry of Science and Technology and 1 innovation team of the Innovative Team Development Plan of the Ministry of Education.

Based on the cutting-edge fields of environment, energy, resources, and safety, the school meets the material needs of the country, regions, and industries, takes the concept of green, circulation, and sustainability as the guideline and industrial enterprises' energy saving, consumption reduction, emission elimination, and efficiency improvement as the goal, and carries out high-level scientific research, technological development, and engineering application in the research orientations, such as pollutant emission reduction and reclamation, clean energy technology, salt lake resource comprehensive application, chemical substance environmental risk evaluation and control, new pollutant governance, hydrogen energy green manufacturing and utilization, chemical reaction security, etc., Forming its own features and advantages. In recent five years, the school won 1 National Second Prize of Technical Invention, 2 National Second Prizes of Scientific and Technological Progress, and 6 Provincial First Prizes of Technological Progress.

The School of Resource and Environmental Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology,  closely responds to the national strategy of Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality and the need for constructing ecological civilization, firmly leads the way of letting ecology go first and realizing green development, and focuses on the innovation of green technology and ion and application of advanced green technology. It systematically implements the crossing and integrated development of the specialties of Resource and Environment, constructs a system of multi-disciplinary collaboration, covering the fields of environment, chemical engineering, energy, safety, etc., accelerates the cultivation of composite and leading talents with both engineering literacy and competence in innovation, and continuously enhances its capacity and level for serving national strategies and guiding future development.
