On January 5, 2025, the device of the demonstrative project of the refinery residue gasification technology (SE liquid carbon-containing substance gasification technology) jointly developed by the East China University of Science and Technology and China Petroleum and Chemical Co., Ltd., with an independent intellectual property right, the hydrogen production device at Phase II of the Zhenhai Base, had good news. The feeding process of the device succeeded at 11:28 on the day, which indicated that our university' material scientific and technological achievements in the field of clean and efficient large-scale refinery residue gasification technologies has been industrially applied, and it also marked that our university has been the only one research organization that masters the techniques to produce synthetic gas with solid, liquid, and gas raw materials, such as coal, residual oil, high-methane gas, etc. in the world, which shows our university's leading status in the field of carbon-containing substance gasification.

The cooperation between China Petroleum and Chemical Co., Ltd. and the East China University of Science and Technology has a long history. The two parties followed the concept of mutual complementation and joint innovation and jointly established the Gasification Technology Research Center of East China University of Science and Technology Co., Ltd. and the East China University of Science and Technology. Based on this platform, the two parties joined hands to overcome a series of technical difficulties and successfully developed three major techniques of large-scale entrained flow gasification, with independent intellectual knowledge property rights, namely SE pulverized coal coal-gasification technology, SE coal-water (coke) slurry gasification technology, and SE oil gasification technology, which infused a powerful momentum into the development of China's carbon-containing substance gasification technology and played an important role in the improvement of large-scale petrochemical engineering enterprises' economic benefit and the comprehensive utilization efficiency of chemical engineering raw materials.


As an important refining and chemical enterprise subordinate to China Petroleum and Chemical Co., Ltd., Sinopec Ningbo Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co., Ltd. boldly undertook heavy burdens and dispatched elites to successively undertake the work of research, development, and engineering demonstration of two large-scale gasification techniques, namely SE coal-water (coke) slurry gasification technology and SE oil gasification technology. During the process of project implementation, the members of the project group of Zhenhai Refining remembered their original intentions and missions, carried forward the spirit of petroleum and petrochemical work, working hard and three down-to-earth issues and four strict requirements, and overcame technical difficulties one by one, laying a solid foundation for the smooth implementation and successful commissioning. It is worth noting that the SE coal-water (coke) slurry gasification device of Phase I of Zhenhai Refining has performed well since it was started, continuously making proud records, such as continuous and steady operation for 1,200 days, the service life of the burner longer than 180 days, etc., which are ahead of similar devices in China to a great extent, and leading the operational level of China's coal-gasification devices. These achievements fully reflect the first-class management level and excellent capacity for technical innovation of Zhenhai Refining, accumulate precious experience for the success of the project of Phase-II, and make important contributions to the technical progress and sustainable development of China's petrochemical engineering industry.


From the 8th Five-year Plan, the East China University of Science and Technology started to continuously carry out research and development of the clean and efficient carbon-containing gasification technology with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, cooperative enterprises, etc. It successively developed the multi-nozzle opposed coal-water slurry gasification technology, multi-nozzle opposed pulverized coal gasification technology, SE pulverized coal gasification, SE coal-water slurry gasification technology, SE oil gasification technology, and high-methane-gas non-catalytic transformation technology, with independent intellectual property rights, which have been applied to more than 100 projects and more than 290 gasifiers (reforming furnaces), forming a demand-oriented gasification technology system based on the characteristics of resources and powerfully supporting the development of China's modern energy and chemical engineering industry. In the new historical period, the East China University of Science and Technology will hold its innovative spirit to actively expand research and application in the field of carbon-containing substance transformation techniques. On the basis of developing and prospering traditional gasification techniques of coal, gaseous hydrocarbon, heavy oil, and other fossil raw materials, it diverted the attention to renewable carbon-containing substances, such as garbage, biomass, etc., strived to realized clean and efficient transformation and preparation of low-carbon and green synthetic gas, and developed the technology of garbage and biomass gasification, which not only realized the high-value reclamation and utilization of wastes, but also provided powerful support for China to achieve the goal of Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality.
