Founded in 1995, the Research Institute of Clean Coal Technology of the East China University of Science and Technology has kept developing and prospering for nearly thirty years. Now it has a scientific research team with more than 100 members, including 19 members who have a senior job title, 11 doctoral supervisors, 3 national talents, 1 chief scientist of the Project 973 of China, 1 winner of the Award for Young Scientific and Technological Researchers of China, 1 winner of the National Award for Innovative Pioneer, 4 members included in the Program of Excellent Talents in the New Century of the Ministry of Education, and 14 provincial talents in various classes. The team has been successively selected as the innovative team of the Innovative Team Development Plan of the Ministry of Education and the innovative team of large-scale coal-gasification technology research and development in key fields of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The Research Institute of Clean Coal Technology is the core team of the unit that undertook the construction of the Key Laboratory of Coal Liquefaction and Gasification and Efficient and Low-carbon Utilization, the National Engineering Research Center of Large-scale Coal Gasification and Coal-based New Materials (Shanghai), the National Center of Energy Coal-gasification Technology Research and Development Engineering, the Engineering Research Center of Carbon-containing Waste Reclamation and Carbon-free Utilization of the Ministry of Education, and the Coal-gasification Engineering Technological Research Center of Shanghai. The institute has high-resolution atomic power microscopes, multi-functional particle size and format analyzers, microscopic laser Raman spectrometers, X-ray powder diffractometers, high-temperature heating stage polarizing microscopes, ultrasound Doppler velocimeters, hyperspectral flame detection systems, and other large-scale and precise instruments and an integral coal quality analysis and evaluation system. It also constructed multiple sets of large-scale cold molds, hot molds, and relevant research devices. The institute's fixed assets are over RMB 50 million.
The Research Institute of Clean Coal Technology has been committed to the fundamental research and application development of the gasification process and technology of entrained flows for a long time. It has undertaken more than 20 key projects/subjects of the Project 973, Project 863, the National Key Research and Development Program, etc., of China, more than 30 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and nearly 300 project entrusted by enterprises. It won 2 National Second Prizes of Scientific and Technological Progress, 3 Provincial Grand Prizes, and 10 Provincial First Prizes. The institute has authorized more than 110 invention patents and more than 120 utility model patents, and published more than 550 papers collected by SCI.
The first multi-nozzle opposed coal-water slurry gasification technology successfully developed by the Research Institute of Clean Coal Technology in China has significance as a milestone in the developmental history of coal gasification of China, and it has been exported to America and Korea. The volume of coal treatment ranks the top in the world, and the technology has been applied to more than 70 projects (more than 200 gasifiers), including the coal-water slurry gasification device with the biggest scale per gasifier in the world, with a daily coal treatment volume of 4000 tons, which continuously leads the development of entrained flow coal-gasification technology. The pulverized coal pressurized gasification technology developed by the institute has been successfully applied to enterprises, such as Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical Co., Ltd., Zhongan Joint Coal Chemistry, Zhongke Refinery & Petrochemical Co., Ltd., etc. In the set of technologies of synthetic gas production through the oxidation of the non-catalytic part of gaseous hydrocarbon, the institute constructed the device of synthetic gas production through the oxidation of the non-catalytic part of coke-oven gas, with the strongest capacity for single-furnace treatment in the world (75000 Nm3/h). Now the research institute is a research and development organization with a set of technologies to gasify three raw materials, namely coal-water slurry, pulverized coal, and gaseous hydrocarbon, in the world.
As the major team of the grassroots teaching unit, the Department of Energy and Chemical Engineering, the School of Resource and Environmental Engineering (Energy and Power Engineering and Energy Storage Science and Engineering), the Research Institute of Clean Coal Technology sets courses, including Fluid Mechanics, Material Mechanics, Combustion Science, Boiler Principles, Process System Engineering, Mass Transfer Unit Manipulation and Equipment, Energy and Sustainable Development, Science of Green Chemical Processes, Single Carbon Atom Chemical Engineering, Reaction Process Principles, Chemical Process Development, Gasification and Combustion Engineering, etc., for undergraduates and postgraduates. It also guides students to complete teaching links, including experiments, internships, thesis papers, etc.
